Chicanná Ecovillage Resort

Very helpful and kind hotel staff. With the current heavy work (for the Maya train) being done in the area of Xpujil, it is quite challenging to find a suitable hotel which offers quietness during the night. Chicanna Ecovillage offers it, even if it has also been indirectly impacted by the trucks and the work. Therefore there are less animals around the hotel. Don’t be surprised that you want be able to pay the initial price in dollars but the reference price will be in MXN pesos, converted at a very low rate in dollars…

We stayed here for 2 nights during our honeymoon while visiting the Calakmul bioreserve. Would not recommend. The rooms were dirty and damp, and our bed linens were dirty, some even had what looked like blood stains on them. The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable. The mosquito nets over the open windows which had no glass, were broken/torn. There is no AC here (which we did know before coming, but it was actually advertised on the billboard outside the resort that there was air conditioning). I got bitten by what I think was bedbugs inside the bed. The water that came out of the shower smelt like sewage. The wifi was only available at the restaurant or the reception, and even then it only worked some of the time and was not great. The pool was filthy - cloudy and the smaller pool had thousands of tadpoles and other bugs living in it so they were clearly not adequately chlorinated. This was a real shame as we were really looking forward to cooling down in the pool after hot days and we just couldn't get into this one. All the other places we stayed at in Mexico had pristine pools. The reception staff were very unfriendly and unhelpful. There was no welcome drink for us, as advertised on their website. Despite being on honeymoon, there was nothing special for us. The rooms look nothing like what the website suggests. Everything seems very old and run down/shabby. The only good thing about this hotel was the wait staff at the restaurant who were absolutely lovely, helpful and really friendly. The food at the restaurant was ok, a little pricey for what it is. The location was useful for getting to Calakmul and also a 30 min drive from the batcave which was really cool. But all in all it was a very unpleasant couple of nights and we could not wait to leave, would not recommend staying here to anyone.

We were quite disappointed about this place. It looks old and no investment has been done for a long time. The terrace looks almost unsafe (see pictures). At the pool there were only 2 sun beds. Other people had to lie on their towel on the floor! I will definitely never be back here!

We stayed 2 nights at the Chicanna eco village resort. The location is good to visit ruins nearly and also the ruins from Calakmul. The staff at the hotel was very nice and friendly. The food in the restaurant is good as well as the service. Also a few comments, there were only 3 (old and kind of dirty) chairs next to the swimming pool. Also the general condition of the hotel could have been better. It seems it's in an older state and could use some upgrade.

Actually a tourist rip-off. Run-down rooms for a price too high for local standards. No internet in the rooms, only in the likewise loveless restaurant. Food was ok, but overpriced compared to the service. Guacamole on the first evening large portion the next evening only half as large. Only cash payment accepted in the restaurant, otherwise you have to go to the „lobby“ building to pay. They escort you there… seem to think that you would flee and not pay and leave all your stuff in the room behind. Almost funny. We would never have swum in the run down pool. Very unfortunate because the fantastic excavations nearby deserve a better accommodation option for guests.I also don‘t know what is „eco“ about this place.

We stopped here on the way from Palenque to Bacalar. It's situated almost in the middle between these two places. There was one other copple. So it was really quiet in the hotel. Already mentioned, the swimmingpool is small and there are only two beds, probably because there are not to many guests. The hotel could use some fresh paint and a make-over. The restaurant though was the highlight, The food and service was excellent. The chef had done a really good job. Only for that, we would return.

Our group birded around the grounds and saw a Northern Potoo and other great birds. If there was air-conditioning, I would rate it higher. No time to use the pool. I had a great fish with cheese sauce dinner.

If you are heading to Calakmul, you are not going to have a lot of options. This is one of them. The setting is nice, the pool refreshing, but the beds were the hardest I’ve ever experienced. We didn’t try the restaurant, so can’t comment on that. Regardless of where you stay, I would recommend driving into Xpujil for the pizza place, one of the best pizzas in Mexico! And, if you have scheduled the time, do drive to Calakmu, the road is paved the entire way, so even a sedan will be no problem. Lastly, I’d recommend the ruins at Becán, between Chicanná and Xpujil. They were really nice and as of today, you can venture to the tops.

Questo resort è assolutamente da evitare. Purtroppo nella zona non ci sono alternative e penso sia l'unico motivo che gli permette di avere dei clienti, ma se riuscite organizzate il vostro viaggio in modo tale da non dover pernottare qui. È pieno di zanzare, anche in camera abbiamo trovato zanzare morte dentro le lenzuola. Il ristorante serve delle pietanze disgustose, tanto che abbiamo rimandato indietro i piatti pressoché pieni nonostante fosse ora di cena e non mangiassimo dalla colazione perché arrivavamo da un soggiorno in Chiapas. Avremmo dovuto fare due notti qui, ma il resort era davvero pessimo perciò il giorno dopo ci siamo alzati molto presto in modo da riuscire a visitare i siti archeologici di Kalakmul e Chicanna nella stessa giornata. Vista l'esperienza della cena non abbiamo nemmeno fatto colazione e alla fine delle visite ai siti archeologici siamo partiti per Bacalar (la tappa successiva del nostro soggiorno) senza usufruire della seconda notte nonostante l'avessimo già pagata.
