The art-deco Hotel Radio is attractive architecturally andcertainly has charm, but it does not offer the level of comfort and service I expect from a hotel of its standing. A previous visit had left me purring and prepared to forget the difficult journey up from Clermont Ferrand to find it, but almost from the start of our lastest visit we felt that offering us comfort was not the prmary objective of the patron or her team It began when I found myself having to move the hotel's waste bins in order to access the car park; they had been left blocking the entrance - and not recently left, by the look of it. I was not offered help with my bags after we had walked up the road to reception, although I was clearly struggling as we climbed the stairs. Sadly, I am no longer young. Our room was large and certainly adequate, but not very up-to-date. Views out across the city were good and one of its highlights, but the room itself was very noisy and unsuitable for an afternoon rest. For much of the time we were there it sounded like furniture was being moved in neighbouring rooms or possibly in the dining room. It was good to have a tub and shower, although the bath took a very long time to run. The worst aspect was the radiators, old-fasioned metal heaters blasting out a very high level of heat over night. My wife and I never sleep in hot rooms. There were no controls to turn them down. I spoke to the manager; she told me she could do it from her office. She didn't, however. We were subject to high levels of heat all night, even with all the windows open. At check-out nexy morning, the reception staff seemed surprised our request had been ignored. Whatever the reason this was so (and i do hope it didn't relate to problems we'd raised about the restaurant that evening) it made for a very unpleasant night. For the price charged, this was a stay that I think fell well below acceptable levels and I shall wonder for a long time why we were treated so badly. My review of the restaurant is posted separately.
