Ribbonwood Country House

An excellent place to stay. It is set in 10 acres of rolling farmland, very peaceful. The accomodation is luxurious and the food is so delicious. Hosts Gary and Robert are very welcoming and have thought of everything to ensure one has a memorable visit.

Robert and Gary made us feel very welcome for our relaxing two night getaway (check out their website to book direct for a multi-night discount). Their property is lovely, and very well maintained. Although Cheviot is currently a little limited for dinner options, I recommend Gary's fine dining standard cooking. The spa pool on a clear night offers wonderful views of the Milky Way (as well as a few planes and shooting stars on our night) and on a rainy afternoon we were able to relax in the well appointed bedroom and lounge. Yes, it is as picturesque as the website shows.

We were looking for the right place for our last night in New Zealand and found it in delightful Ribbonwood. It completely met our expectations based on reviews here and email exchanges with Gary and Robert, who designed Ribbonwood from scratch. Upon arrival, you're greeted by lovely landscaped flowers, shrubs and trees, and the friendly yapping of their darling dogs. Walk inside with Robert and marvel at the outrageously idyllic scenery: green meadows, rolling hills, snow-capped mountains, sheep and cows. I regret we didn't have the time to walk down into the painting! We stayed in the deluxe room: compact with two twin beds, two easy chairs, a large bathroom, coffee/tea makings, nice robes, a safe and a terrace. Everything was comfortable, stylish and high quality. We enjoyed New Year's dinner by Gary (each guest has to pre-order the same items): great arancini, delicious lamb with veggies, and an amazing apple blossom dessert: Gary's specialty from his past life as chef. Then we toured Robert's extensive garden with the dogs alongside. The next morning, I spotted some rabbits on the lawn before our nice continental breakfast with fresh breads, then an easy drive to Christchurch airport and home. Ribbonwood is clearly a labor of love for Gary and Robert; it was a pleasure to share in their enthusiasm as guests in their enchanting home. Thanks, guys!

What a wonderful place! This was truly a 5* experience. Superb room, comfortable bed, with luxury facilities and the view!! We only stayed one night on our way to the airport but my goodness we intend to come back. Robert and Gary were great hosts. We had a superb dinner courtesy of chef Gary. The whole experience was classy all the way.

Ribbonwood is a very special place - beautiful in its location with amazing views, warmth and humour from Gary and Robert, beautiful food, exemplary comfort - we could go on. Please don’t make this a one night stop - it most certainly warrants at least 2 nights. Our vegetarian dinner was first class and worthy of huge praise - in fact I have managed to coax the recipe from Gary’s recipe book. Robert is an excellent host also and the amazing garden and grounds are a credit to him. Ribbonwood is an outstanding ambassador for New Zealand hospitality. We look forward to another stay and another recipe - thank you Gary and Robert.

This is the most serene and comfortable stay I've ever had. The rooms are so beautifully decorated. The views are stunning. Let's just talk about the service and food! Omg. . . Restaurant quality, worth every cent. You will be welcomed with such warmth when you arrive and the care and attention goes on until you leave. Highly recommend staying with this very charming couple, who really have passion for what they do. X

5 Star+ perfect stay!! We spent our last 3 nights of our 4 week holiday at Ribbonwood Country House and it was just so beautiful and perfect from the first moment on. We stayed at many beautiful places, but this was for sure the most beautiful and welcoming one! Gary cooked for us 3 times, unbelievable food and so tasty. The hosts, Gary and Robert, are both sooo friendly, funny, helpful and entertaining! The view is more than stunning and relaxing, the whirlpool is heaven, the animals (sheep and dogs) were super sweet and lovely. Happy to had this experience at your place, big thank you! A beautifully appointed luxury room with such breathtaking veiws. The Hosts were really thoughtful and respectful at all times. Plus the delightful homemade dinner on my last night was a real treat too. Can't wait to return!!

Great hospitality in bucolic countryside! This was a wonderful stop between Christchurch and Blenheim. Gary and Robert are consummate hosts, and will go out of their way to make you comfortable. 10/10! We also enjoyed their dinner, which was delicious. Perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but we were glad not to have to venture out (and there really isn’t much close by). Thank you, and we would happily stay at Ribbonwood House again.
