Our experience here is always so lovely, the reception/manager named Sian is always so helpful and kind. We got married at this venue and it was the best day of our lives!!! We stayed here a year on and they made our stay so special, we will definitely be returning.

Planned a visit for my husbands 'special' birthday as a surprise, even paid extra for a room upgrade! I checked reviews previously made and booked in confidence due the Best Western name - I was very disappointed! The room was filthy on first appearances, as was many of the surrounding areas. Dusty furniture, bathroom dirty and in need of repairs - not what you would have expected from a room of this cost. Even the coffee container was filthy and needed a good clean. After complaining the reception, I was asked to leave the room for a period of time for a housekeeper to go and reclean. From what I could see they just sprayed air freshener around the room at best! Breakfast was OK - warm but mediocre On returning home, we made an official complaint to the Manager. Firstly we were offered a refund and to call in the following day to talk to the Reception manager to arrange...they were not in, same as the next day. We finally had a response, only to be advised the letter was a typo and that we were actually offered a good will gesture of 50% off our next stay at the Rose and Crown.....No thanks, why would we choose to come back! Do yourself a favour everyone, save your money and go to a Premium Inn. At least its a good night guarantee and a decent breakfast!

The exterior of the building is just lovely, unfortunately the room wasn’t. What is the main thing you want to do in a hotel room? Sleep. That’s simply impossible in room 130. Gawd knows why hotels with perfectly good sized rooms put in the smallest sized bed possible. I sometimes wonder if they just hate their customers. But this wasn’t the main issue, we can sleep in a small double bed but not this one. Ever seen The Exorcist? Well the bed in room 130 groans and moans and goes through to your very soul. Any slightest movement and we were in the film, it needs to be dumped or exorcised. The hotel staff either can’t be bothered to test the bed or simply like their guests to suffer. Needless to say, we barely slept. The pillows were uncomfortable. The bathroom: brown water stains on the door, chipped panels and a badly frosted window facing the carpark. The frosting didn’t meet the window frame, there were clear glass areas. Would you trust that people couldn’t see your shape through the glass, as it was right by the shower? Given the state of the bed, I didn’t, so I tried to hang a cardigan at the window. It needs a blind, otherwise it’s just plain creepy. No mirror in the room so I had to stand in the wardrobe to dry my hair, only the door would not open fully because it was badly fitted. Outside our room in the car park are benches, clearly audible hacking cough (poor person!) in our room early morning, maybe move the benches away from rooms so guests don’t hear this. What did we like? Receptionist who checked us in, once we got attention was lovely, ordering cabs and gave us a great welcome. At checkout we weren’t asked how our stay was (another member of staff). Super quick, but maybe every resident of room 130 is so grumpy about not sleeping they dare not enquire. We’ve stayed here before in 2021, and it wasn’t great, but just ok, breakfast was messed up and the room was scruffy, but this time it was the grimmest stay in a hotel ever, we’ve travelled extensively and didn’t expect Colchester to top the charts!

My family and friends stayed to attend our wedding, which was also being held at the Rose and Crown. I cannot fault our stay here. The staff were brilliant. The food was delicious, with very generous portions. Thoroughly recommend, we had a fabulous time!

Wonderful hotel, offering a truly special experience. Delightful, sincerely helpful staff. Beautiful, very clean room and bathroom. Delicious breakfast buffet, with a particularly good full English breakfast. A sense of history, everywhere. We enjoyed staying in room 201, with a few extra blankets.

Lovely 14th century hotel, staffed by excellent friendly, helpful staff. Added bonus of free parking.Our breakfasts were included and were some of best we've had. The full breakfast is cooked to order and comes out piping hot. Much better than a hot buffet. Staff happy to accommodate personal preferences, example I dont like crispy bacon, and my 'soft' bacon was perfect. Yasmin was a delight, first thing in morning, cheerful, helpful and inflammable. Rowen was the perfect reception staff to greet new arrivals during the day. The young lady on reception in evenings was also lovely, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we didn't notice her name. Rooms clean and comfortable, nice to find a fan, as it was rather warm during our stay. The complementary cookies on reception were a nice touch and tasty. It's a good 15minute uphill walk into city centre, which some people may find d a struggle, but there does seem to be plenty of buses running both ways.
