The good I stayed here with my mother. The hotel room was spacious with a couch at the end of the bed. Breakfast was great, so much variety and lots of tasty and healthy options. The decor is quite traditional but this added to the quaintness for us. The location is great. The bad We wanted to stay an extra night and it was impossible to book the extra night online. We tried several times to reach the hotel by phone to no avail. We also sent e-mails to which they never replied. A day or so before arriving, we finally got through. We spoke with a young lady who said we could extend our stay but never sent e-mail confirmation, which she said she would. We had to call yet again to make sure we got the email confirmation for our second night. It seems that it shouldn't be that hard to make a reservation. The worst Upon check-out, we had a bad experience with Daniele, one of the hotel receptionists. First, she tried to charge us 277 euros for our second night when the price indicated in the confirmation email (thank God I insisted to get that confirmation e-mail!) was 203 euros. So we pointed that out to her and she kindly changed the price. Honest mistake, fair enough. But when the time came to pay for the first night, the invoice I'd received by email said 195 euros but I was charged 203. I asked why one night was 195 and the other was 203 Daniele explained this was because of the city tax. OK, no problem However, I wanted to understand why the city tax was included in one invoice (203) and not included in the other (195). You'll understand that I was skeptical of Daniele's calculation capacities given she had first tried to charge us 277 euros for a room that was meant to be 203. I live in Amsterdam and have been to Cologne more times than I can count. I know there is a tourism and culture tax. I simply wanted to understand why one of my invoices included the city tax and why the other didn't. I wanted to know what I was paying for. Instead of taking the time to kindly explain, Daniele shoved the card machine at me and told me she had other things to do. I was told I should research a place before travelling there. She got increasingly impatient with my inability to understand. I know I must have been annoying for her but Daniele's way of dealing with me was so rude. When I calmly took a moment to step away to read the fine print before tapping my card to the machine she was shoving in my face, I overhead her saying Scheiße. You can guess what that translates to. All of this went on in German, which I can understand some of but do not speak. My mother does speak German so she acted as the intermediary. It was frankly quite shocking to have a hotel receptionist speaking so harshly and rudely in front of my 65-year old mother. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this place as a first option due to the poor customer service, but it does have its positive aspects as outlined above. Your call!
