Nice upgrade....but I miss the proper old atmosphere...duke box,regulars,even a bandit...has no banter feels like a reception for a dentist/doctors but just a pretentious restaurant/bar...I'd get it if it was top quality but alas no..Matt you were the best..fab times... totally missed.

Great welcome at reception, upgraded to a lovely refurbished room First class service in the restaurant and lovely food served. Breakfast was nice, a few other options available would be great like black pudding or haggis. Pleasant stay on my third visit

Awful atmosphere in restaurant. The only music was the loud base of dance music in the function room reverberating throughout the building. Food was atrocious. My "ribeye" steak was not a ribeye. No eye, no fat, lots of grizzle, tough and had a poor taste. It had not been seared, and clearly had not been rested. The onion it came with was mostly raw. The mushroom soggy. The peppercorn sauce can only be described as snotty - see pic to understand. Thankfully the tomatoes were cooked, which wasn't the case for everyone. Nobody checked how our meal was, or asked about it as the plates were cleared. I complained to a member of staff that it was inedible. Despite this we were charged full price for a awful meal which was not a ribeye, and took the left over meat home for my dog as dog food is about all it's fit for.

Stayed here as a couple for one night. Room was large, clean, minimalistic and warm. Good sized bathroom with a large walk in shower. Breakfast was adequate and plentiful for us. Free parking in a secure area. Downside was that there was no hot water in our bathroom sink and the water was a mere trickle. The sink was also tiny causing me to splash water when washing my face. Shower pressure was not great. There was no mirror in the bedroom area so I couldn’t wash my hair as no mirrors next to a plug to dry it. Mirror in bathroom was good but obviously I can’t plug my hairdryer and straighteners in there. We also couldn’t assess our outfits for the next day as no large mirror. We just nodded at each other that we looked ok. Bed was comfy if a little on the soft side but we slept well. Would we stay again…….probably as it was convenient for us but I’ll ask for a different room.

The staff were friendly and apologetic for shortfalls. The room we were provided is one I had complained about 3 years ago. At the head of the bed on the left, adjacent to the electrical socket, there is a large square gap in the wall with an electrical cable showing. Despite complaining about this as a fire hazard 3 years ago, nothing has been done to repair it since that previous stay. There was a long black hair on the toilet bowl. Some of the tiles in the bathroom were cracked. The shower was very dated and a little rusty. The window would not close properly because of a broken mechanism on the right-hand side. The only way to close it was to push the metal in with your fingers and slam the window shut before the metal sprung back out, I told the girl at reception who told me there was nowhere else to move us to because the hotel was fully booked. The room should have come with an ironing board and iron as stipulated, but these were absent. After a long day out, when We returned to the hotel, we found that our towels that we had left in the bath had not been replaced. The night porter was able to find two bath towels but no hand towels. Breakfast was quite frankly disgusting. Upon arrival and in good time, there was only enough filter coffee left for one mug, and the other coffee jug was empty. There were four slices of bread, no nushrooms left, and four cremated fried eggs that were so overcooked that they bounced like/ latex. I asked for some fresh eggs to be cooked, and the waitress came back with them and added them to bainmarie. I walked over to collect two fried eggs for my son and I but these 'freshly cooked' eggs were also hard and overcooked. There were no vegetarian or vegan options unless you like baked beans on their own with no spread for toast because only butter was available.. There were no sauces available. There was only one large plate left for use, and after pointing it out to her, the waitress rectified this and came back with a stack of them (dinner plates - not breakfast plates).

The dining area of this establishment has lots of character, warmth and is very well laid out. Could not fault any of the young staff who were polite and friendly. The menu and quality of food however needs an overhaul. Thai fish cake starter had no semblance of lemongrass, ginger or chilli and was decidedly bland. Fish and chips main was ok. At least the fish had been properly drained of oil before serving but the chips and tiny ramekin of peas were an embarrassment. This place has bags of potential and the right chef would be transformative. We wouldn’t rush back until this happens.

Had a fantastic time at this hotel. The room was good but a bit in need of decorating but bed very comfy. Staff were very welcoming and mannerly. Food was lovely and the entertainment made it a bit special for our anniversary. Would recommend.
