It was my first time staying in Ellmau, although am familiar with the SkiWelt, having stayed in Soll many times. It was also my first time staying in a Pension, and I really struck gold with the Alpenpension Claudia. From the moment I arrived, I was made to feel so welcome by the wonderful Sladi. It was just a short walk (2 mins) to pick up my key from the Hochfilzer Hotel, and once back at the Claudia settled into my room. I had a single on the top floor, with fantastic views of the WilderKaiser range. The room was a single - small, but not tiny - and very comfortable, with a mid-sized bed (not a single, but not quite a double), good sized wardrobe, table and chairs and a small but perfectly formed bathroom, with powerful shower. It felt very homely! Breakfast was I think the best I've experienced anywhere in Austria (and I've stayed at some very nice hotels). A great variety of breads, cheeses, hams, cereals etc, plus every day perfectly cooked scrambled eggs and a different cake, pancakes or other baked item...absolutely delicious. Also the coffee, which was strong and plentiful. The breakfast rooms were beautiful too. I was booked on a half-board package with Inghams (UK Tour operator) and had dinner at the Hochfilzer each evening. Every meal was fantastic...a varied salad buffet, a sorbet (often drenched in alcohol) or soup, delicious main courses (including a vegetarian option) and lovely deserts. The best thing about the whole holiday though was the staff. Everyone I encountered was so friendly, yet professional, and made me feel really welcome. From the team at the Claudia (particularly Sladi and Isuru who felt like friends by the end of the week) to the team in the main hotel - the cheerful receptionists, those in the bar and restaurant who really looked after me, and the chefs with their kitchen team who created delicious meals. So, thank you to everyone at the Claudia (and Hochfilzer)...I can't wait to return in March!
