We spent one night here on a cross country trip. It was listed as a pet friendly hotel, and the photos looked nice. We reserved a queen suite + kitchenette for, what I thought was, a fair price. We were exhausted after a long day of driving, and we checked in well after midnight. The young man at the front desk was incredibly kind and helpful. Our room was on the second floor, by the stairway, which was super convenient since we had our dogs with us. The room with the beds seemed nice enough and it + the bathroom appeared worn but clean The adjoining room with the kitchenette was an incredible disappointment. There was a refrigerator, a non-working dishwasher, two burners, and a microwave. There were pots and pans strewn in the cupboard below the sink and they appeared to be dirty, there was not a utensil, dish, glass, towel, etc. in sight. Nothing except for a large bottle of dishwashing liquid. The outside of the microwave was filthy and covered in food splatter and crumbs; I didn't even dare open it to look inside. The plexiglass behind the burners was covered in grease and grime, as was the hood above the burners. It was disgusting, and absolutely filthy. In the morning I went to get coffee and something to eat in the breakfast area. At 8:30 am the only hot food available was a small amount of dried up scrambled eggs and 3 pieces of bacon, covered in grease. When I went to throw away the empty creamer pod, I didn't want to even touch the flap on the trash can because it was absolutely covered in filth. It did not appear that it had been cleaned in a very long time. I mean it was disgusting. There was not a soul in sight. At check-out I spoke to the front desk attendant and to the general manager, Becky. I said that I was going to give a one star review, which was generous considering the dirty room and breakfast area. The one star was for the beds, which were comfortable, and the nice guy at check-in, otherwise it would have been zero stars. Becky apologized for the condition of the room and said she was unaware of the conditions in the breakfast area. I told her that I realize they are most likely over-worked and understaffed, however there is no excuse for the dirt, grime and food matter that was in both the room and the food area. There is no way that she didn't know that the trash can in the breakfast area, 15 steps from the front desk, was so disgustingly dirty. Becky offered to comp our room (I have not seen a credit come through on my credit card yet), which was thoughtful, and she assured me she would take care of this and no one would have this experience again. Honestly, I wouldn't stay here again under any circumstance. The previous night we stayed at a competitor, for the same rate, and while the hotel definitely showed some wear and tear, it was at least clean. If I was the health department in Grinnell, Iowa, I would be paying this hotel a visit in the near future. What a shame that the manager doesn't kn
