Hanamaki in Iwate is well known for its hot springs (onsen), with ryokans located in a number of onsen clusters, named the "Hanamaki 12 Tou". Hotel Sanemon, located in Dai onsen (one of the 12 Tau) ) that has a long history and said to have been discovered 1200 years ago, seems to be the only ryokan in this area with an outdoor bath. And it's lovely to soak in the outdoor bath against the chilly weather in autumn. This is a traditional ryokan with nothing fancy, but they have obviously modernised all amenities to ensure guests enjoy a high level of comfort. There is even a remote control for the main light in the room for convenience. All staff, at the front desk and in the restaurant, are friendly and helpful. Everything considered, room rate with breakfast and dinner included in the package, I would say they offer excellent value for money. In terms of transportation, there is a free shuttle bus connecting the Shin-Hanamaki Shinkansen station to Dai Onsen, and the hotel is only a few minutes' walk from the bus station. Hence, it is easily accessible even if one does not drive.
