Seljavellir Guesthouse

Nice hotel but clearly overpriced. I think at least 40% vs what it should be in Iceland. Cheap forniture, poor service (reception closing, no restaurabt, no bar…). Would recommend not to go over the 250 euros per night. Personnel is nice, which is good

We were lead to believe this place was in John but was nowhere near it. The hotel is in a field up a gravel road. Looks like a barn and in my opinion is done to meet the most basic of standard expectations. Yes it has a bed, a bathroom and not much else. They say there are flat screen TVs - there are not. There are absolute basics in the room, one pillow, one towel no kettle and nowhere to get a coffee or tea and you’re in the middle of nowhere! The floor is cold and like that soft stuff they put in kids playground incase they fall over! Anyone walking past looks straight into your room. We found this place soul less to the point we almost left to find alternative accommodation but in the end just got into bed at 7pm! Oh and showers curtains are OLD!!! Breakfast was alap very ordinary. Will never recommend this place.

We stayed here as a family for one night and here is our experience summary. Pros: - The independent units are easy to get to if you have a lot of luggage as they are all in a row - The view is fabulous, we had the mountain facing view and in the morning, waking up to bids chirping and beautiful mountains was an amazing feeling - The room is clean and medium size, bathroom is big and perfect for one night - Ample parking Cons: - It isn’t close to the city Center, right at the entrance of the town - if you have to stay for a few nights, might get uncomfortable depending on how much luggage you have - Breakfast is not included, you have to pay extra but you don’t mind if it is really good, this is average with bad coffee

Like many other traveller reviews, this was a basic lodging on the main south route around Iceland. Bathrooms ok but flooring in the rooms were not nice. Breakfast very basic and not as good as others on our 9 day trip. Staff friendly, but unfortunately the whole experience was let down by the fact that our tour operator had included a Mountain View room - this is not what we got, nor were the staff able to rearrange our accommodation - which meant we were placed in a room with a road view (not the best). This is also a good 7 minute drive to Hofn for food and drink. There is not a bar in this guesthouse (despite the information received from tour operator) which meant it was not ideal for us.

The guesthouse has everything what is needed for a good stay for a night: comfortable beds, big bathroom, water boiler, caffe and tee, free WiFi, very kind lady at the reception, breakfast. The big windows have folia outside, from the rooms there's a view, but from outside nothing can be seen . Finally a room, where we can sleep in dark - very good curtains.....

5 minute drive to Hofn for restaurant and supplies. Good sized room with a large desk/work surface. Good blackout curtains (for summer stays). Average breakfast. In the quiet countryside. ....adding characters so tripadvisor will accept review

Right on the main highway, but a few kilometers from town. There are no attractions or restaurants within walking distance. The facilities are fairly new. Spacious rooms. Rooms on the back side have a nice view of the mountains. They serve a nice breakfast in the morning. We would stay again if returning to the area.

If you stay, ask for a room in the back so that you can see the mountains. The rooms in the front face the highway, which isn’t much to look at. I imagine in winter it would not matter much, but now, in June, there is constant light, so having a nice view is helpful. When we first arrived, reception was closed. We came back an hour later at the published check-in time and the staff still was not present. We did get in to our room about 30 minutes later. The previous four nights in Iceland, the hot water available was instant and VERY hot. Here, we had the opposite problem. We were surprised at how long the water had to run to get to hot. The room did not have washcloths. The sheets on my husbands side of the bed had small black stains. It was the first time I’ve stayed in a hotel where there were only two pillows. I know that sounds picky, but I have poor joints, so I sleep with two pillows, one for my head, and one to elevate my knees. Not while at Seljavellir Guesthouse. I tried to make due with my airline neck pillow. Ha! Not a good substitute. I would not opt to stay here again.

The room was fine. Don't understand why the shower was in the middle of the bathroom with no shower wall. The floor got really wet so had to use the squeegee broom before the next person could go in. With only 1 towel provided per person and no bath mat made walking in the wc with bare feet and a wet floor inconvenient. Also the key to lock the door was a challenge. But maybe that was user error. The guesthouse is outside of town. Would be great if you could turn off the patio light
