A comida é bem cara, no verdadeiro estilo Disney.

We’ve been at this hotel for 4 hours and we are already trying to check out early. $1,500 a night we expect a clean room, a responsive staff and a place to eat breakfast. When we arrived we were created by an awesome front desk person. Great check in, but unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Room has some pretty obvious cleanliness issues. Hairs on multiple countertops, unswept floors and what looks like drool on the pillowcases. Called down to the desk at 10:30 pm to get more pillows and blankets (sofa bed had none for my kids) and to check on when our luggage would be delivered. “It will be right up.” Call back at 11:00 pm to check on it and was put on auto hold for 15 minutes. Finally hung up and walked down to the driveway where I found my luggage still sitting at the street. Bellman said he would take it right up and did. Stopped at the desk to check on the pillows and blankets and he said they would be right up. 12:35 am, still no pillows and blankets for the sofa beds. Also, checked on breakfast reservation when I came in. None available for any of the 4 days we are here. They don’t have room service, and the options I was given when asked if we were just out of luck for breakfast was “well you can come down at 7am and get on our waitlist or eat brunch after 11 in another restaurant.” That’s what $1,500 gets you here.

Called to make a dining reservation as we we are staying next door. Whoever is answering the phone was rude and hung up on me before I had asked all my questions! Not the Disney and Aloha experience I expected. Now not sure I ever want to stay there, which I was considering for our next Oahu vacation.

This hotel at $700 a night is extremely expensive that said I felt it was worth the price. The property is gorgeous and immaculately maintained. Staff was always excellent and kind. We had a partial Oceanview room which really had a full 180 degree oceanview directly in front of our balcony and to our right was more ocean. The room was lightly cleaned every other day which was perfect for us. Food at Makahiki was delicious but expensive. Other food options were also tasty ie Ulu market and snack stands, poolside bar. Characters were readily available for meet and greets during the day without much of a wait. Tons of things to entertain the kids. We loved the iPad scavenger hunt and my 7 yr old son looked forward to going to the Pau Hana room every day to pick up their free craft. He also really enjoyed participating in T-shirt making. He loved Aunty’s Beach house kids club but it definitely need to have more availability. It’s booked two weeks in advance which I did not know until we go to the property. I was lucky that they had one spot left for 1.5 hrs for one day of our stay. The kids really enjoyed both pool slides and the lazy River as well. We also went to their luau which I absolutely loved! The show was beautiful and it’s story was well told. The food was delicious as were the drinks. Overall we had a wonderful stay and I highly recommend it if you are visiting Oahu.

We arrived last night June 17 for a 5 night stay in an ocean view villa at 7:30 in the evening. So we aren’t skimping to be here. The bellman’s greeting hardly acknowledged us and almost seemed bothered by us having a full car of stuff for our 3 kids. No lei or special welcome like other top resorts across the islands. We travel to Hawaii yearly from So Cal and this was definitely not the greeting we are used to experiencing in Hawaii. As newbies to Aulani we hoped to have someone give us some guidance about lay of the land and what happens where, but it was pulling teeth to get info when we checked in. There was a long line at check in & only one person there to greet us. Maybe they just assume everyone knows their way around, but for new folks to this property it was frustrating. We asked if there was any way to upgrade rooms from our 1 bedroom ocean view villa and all she said was you have a good room. The room is quite nice and does have a view of the ocean from the 12th floor. The bellman Caesar who delivered our bags was the most helpful and answered questions for us and explained about going & buying cups to use for our stay. We went down and got the cups from the restaurant and in between getting ice in the cups and filling up with sodas, a worker came & shut down all the fountain drinks as it closes at 8:30 and said we would have to go to one of the other drink dispensaries to fill up our drinks. With 3 girls under 7 we can do it, but as we just paid $22/per cup for the five of us to literally have it shut down in front of us after we got ice but not drinks for the girls was not service oriented. Once again, I think as novices here we will learn how all works, but Disney like Four Seasons & Ritz Carlton is set apart by their service and the service we received so far is subpar at best. We can deal with restaurants being sold out & not getting into the activities for our girls because they are sold out for the first days, but when the service element is missed, it is disappointing. I hope by the end of the stay ill be writing a 5 star review on the resort and all its amenities and that we figured out how it all works here, and I expect the workers here to be better than what we first encountered.

Prior to my visit, I was confident Disney’s top-notch customer service and attention to detail would be the factors that distinguished Aulani from other resorts. Though it goes without saying Aulani is a beautiful property, the amenities are worth nowhere close to the given price tag, and the Disney standard for hospitality / customer service was sorely lacking. The good things about Aulani (nice beaches, pools, and sunsets) could be found at an island resort at another destination for half the cost and significantly better customer service. I’m not joking when I say the Polynesian at WDW was more like what I expected an actual Hawaiian resort to be (and at least I got a complimentary lei there, unlike Aulani!). During my stay, I stayed in both a studio and one of the hotel rooms available to book with DVC points. The studio was cute and very similar to ones I’ve stayed in at other DVC resorts, both in the design of the room and amenities. The hotel room, however, was pretty beat and not worth the price tag at all (stained furniture, half-working shower head, dollar-store shower curtain, dust, etc.); it looked like it had been a while since attention was given to the room. It’s worth noting that, had I paid cash, both of these rooms would’ve cost $750 a night during the relative “low” season; to be blunt, the room didn’t feel like it was worth half that price. Though trivial details don’t make or break a vacation, they reflect the limited effort put into offering an experience that matches the premium price tag. In terms of resort offerings, the beach was one of the few places that had a “paradise” feel; likewise, the infinity pool overlooking the beach was an oasis. The lazy river was nice at times, though often became filled with debris and kids messing around with inner tubes as the day went on (which also made it hard to find a tube at times). Beyond the pools, room tours, and character spots, it was hard to find an activity that wasn’t a “premium experience” (i.e., extra money). The amount of adults who signed up for ukelele lessons admittedly because it was a free activity (pretty much the entire room) was hysterical and reflected the limited nature of complimentary offerings. I didn’t travel with kids, but I can’t imagine how much would’ve been spent if opting to do the various paid offerings (and before thinking you can just tell your kids “no” to all of these activities, the plenty of screaming/crying kids around the resort will tell you otherwise - the lifeguards were looking for a couple missing kids per day). Overall, I was disappointed in the staff at Aulani - the disdain for tourism was evident in quite a few, while others were friendly enough to play the game but seemed insincere. Across the course of my trip, I only had a handful of interactions with staff members that actually came off as genuine (gift shop and character attendants). The front desk staff was pretty stoic and not very welcoming or helpful. Weekend
