Lets start with the negatives...We arrived at 11pm and was given room 215, as soon as we walked into the room the air was thick with cigarette smoke, it smelt like someone had been smoking in there all day. It was also dark and very dated and also extremely loud with music from nearby " fun " pubs. We attempted to open the curtain to the balcony and this fell off the wall!! We quickly went back to reception and politely requested a different room, the man on reception was very helpful and we were then given a top floor room in the eves, much more modern and not as noisy, however we were still shocked at how noisy the area was....so glad we had ear plugs! We tried the pool, but the area around it was quite tired and yet again loud rubbish trance music was playing, this really put us off spending any time there as did the fact that we asked for a drinks menu to look at prices and order but the young waiters seemed much more interested in the large group sitting and drinking at the large table, the menu never came so we didnt get any drinks. There was also trance/house music playing in the restaurant and bar one evening when we were thinking on having drinks there, we walked out as it was really unpleasant. The safe is advertised at £20 per week, mum went down to pay and get the key and was then quoted £30!? The room looked clean but there was a lot of dust on the floor every day, we were constantly washing our feet! Also found it odd that the cleaner knocked on our door the morning of last day with an envelope asking for tips, we always tip in room but felt it pushy and uncomfortable. The positives, late check out at 12pm, comfortableish beds, plenty of storage, beautiful views of the mountains, some nice restaurants and bars nearby. 20 mins walk to the front, 25 to castle/old town/bazaar. Lots to do in the area i.e excursions which are great value for money, plenty of dolmus buses about to get out and explore. Overall you get what you play for, however it wasn't for us, felt a bit like an 18-30 type resort at times, the hotel is too dated/tired and way too loud. Not really sure why its rated so highly. We are used to basic self catering apartments and feel we are quite easily pleased and not pushy however this place really did fall short. We would return to Marmaris but not Armutalam, there is better hotels for similar prices in this area too.
