We loved our stay at the Hoshina resort in Matsumoto. The rooms were beautiful and the onsen was heavenly. I wish I'd stayed longer just to keep enjoying the onsen facilities! The staff were very friendly and helpful. I didn't stay long but did enjoy the piano playing in the evening. We also had the tasting menu and both dinner and breakfast were spectacularly presented. If there was one thing to improve it would be to make air conditioner both lower and stronger. It was very hot out and we had a hard time cooling the room down enough. Also, the dining room walls could use a bit of a refresh.

Stayed at 2 Hoshino Kai resorts this trip and I would say the service at Kai Alps was much better than Kai Matsumoto. The food at Kai Matsumoto was very much better than Kai Alps though. So all in all, we really enjoyed staying at Hoshino resorts and cannot wait to explore more areas! When staying at Hoshino resorts, I really do recommend getting the special dinner and in room onsen.
As an European these Raikans are rather different and unique. It takes some adjusting to this special Japanese way of staying eg using there clothes, eating 20 servings for dinner, no cola etc etc - However, if you accept it and take it as an experience I guarantee you that you will enjoy this very unique Raikan/hotel… Rooms are originally designed and you sleep on the floor with a hard pillow. You eat in a dedicated private room and get 20 different dishes for dinner - some very Japanese. We had three nights here - and I can only recommend that you try it. The hot spa and baths are really great! Only small thing is the location - however, busses are running directly from outside the hotel all day and often - and takes you to the castle or the station…

Very poor value for money. Hotel and rooms looks tired and need investment. Food was mediocre and we asked to cancel our food and they told us that they would not refund us for non consumed food costs. We are certainly not coming back. Very expensive hotel for mediocre experience

The pictures do not look like the rooms we new we were staying at a Ryokan as we had stayed in Hakone. No comparison this is a bare bones place. Oh they have a pianist play late evening but the room is awful two chairs and a table beds are made up when at dinner. The Onsen is hard to use as no where to hang a towel without it getting wet. No food mid day only breakfast and lunch. By the the city is shut down on Wednesdays. Would not recommend to no Japanese.
