Had the misfortune of staying at Fortune House. Old, unmodernized apartments. Fairly good location in Brickell, but here was my quick list of its failings:
1. AC did not work. Rather than a modern Nest system, they had a thermostat from the 1960s on the wall (see pic) that did not work at all. We were unable to control heat or cold as a result and ended up freezing all night. Flooring throughout was cheap porcelain which was freezing cold underfoot.
2. The furnishings resembled that of a student apt. Pokey, very uncomfortable and cheap sofa. Cheap flat screen tv. Horrible table and chairs thrown into the middle of the room. Zero love went into this place. Bed was actually ok however.
3. Very poor quality finishes (or should I say non finishes). See attached photos. Could not access washer dryer because door was fitted in such a way it would not open. Light switch was hidden behind a wall canvas. Tv channel box was balanced on top of tv (see pic) and falling behind back. Wooden cabinet doors all crumbling due to damp air from lack of ventilation.
4. Lack of ventilation. Bathroom did not have a proper extractor fan so filled with steam in seconds and stayed steamy. Wooden cabinets rotting away as a result.
5. Ridiculously outdated micro bath / shower. Hit head every time had to enter shower on ugly metal frame from the mid 70s. Designed for midgets or children perhaps. Even had a miniature toilet that no grown adult or any stature could sit on without making a mess.
6. View from the balcony of just car parks. Endless concrete car parks. No screening or planting to make an effort to to hide this.
7. Reception filled with people making similar complaints to mine. Each told that the only remedy was to not charge the $28 resort fee. Concluded that the resort fee was the buffer for making unhappy customers feel somewhat compensated, despite drastically overpaying for what the rooms are actually worth.
Final thoughts:
Why on earth does the owner of this place not invest his or her or their funds on improving and modernizing the rooms, rather than making the outside of the entrance area look legit. Surely that investment would be repaid in spades in the form of actually happy customers who leave good reviews and recommend FH to their friends.
