We came to South Haven for a wedding. We booked the room weeks in advance. When we arrived and got into the room the first thing I noticed was the door jamb security bar post was missing. My wife then asked me to turn on the AC to make sure it worked. When I turned it on, there was a metallic clanking sound, Think CLANK CLANK TING CLANK CLANK TING CLANK CLANK TING. “We can’t stay here.” She went to the front desk and requested a new room. The manager came to the room acknowledged that it needed maintenance. “I have called maintenance and they will be here tomorrow or the next day, we are fully booked, but in the meantime, I can get another room for tonight only, but you will have to move back the original room tomorrow. New room. AC worked — but barely. Stains on the carpet, stains on the couch, empty Albanese Gummy Candy wrapper and a pair of prescription turquoise frame glasses — that from the amount of dust on them had been there a while — between the mattress and headboard (there was a gap large enough for a pillow to fall into). When we returned from the rehearsal dinner as I walked into the room I felt water drop on my shoulder. I looked up and water was dripping from the smoke detector. Sigh. “We can’t stay here.” We brought the manager up, she sighed and slumped her shoulders. Said we had to stay the night but we would be able to check out and get our money back. Next morning, checked out no problem. Told we’d get a refund in three to five business days. The takeaway: This is a poorly maintained hotel quite likely owned by an absent money- grubbing slum lord, managed by thoughtful competent people. That is only reason I have it a one star and not a negative five stars.
