Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel

Costa Rica has been a bucket list vacation destination for quite some time. I found Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel back in April and booked a late July trip. Travel was easy! Southwest Airlines into Liberia! We had a great experience renting a car from Adobe which included all fees, insurance, and mileage. The drive from Liberia to Tamarindo is about 70 miles, however, it is on a very winding two lane highway with multiple small towns and decreased speed limits in between. Plan on 1.5 hours minimum following the shortest routes (the WAVE app was very helpful and highly recommended). Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel - what an amazing hotel. I can easily say, this is the finest hotel/resort we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. The location, outside of the crowded portions of Tamarind, is perfect and downtown in only a 10-15 minute stroll. There is a private beach area with moderate waves (ideal for beginners to learn how to surf), a beautiful island 500 yards out and beautiful volcanic rock formations all the way south to the Playa Langosta! This setting lends itself to peaceful views and spectacular sunsets. We rented a bungalow, near the pool area. It was absolutely beautiful. Mahogany woodwork, beautiful tile floors, handmade mahogany furniture, a spacious European style bathroom with tub, dual sinks, and water conserving toilet. Just out the back door is a spacious outdoor shower area, private, yet very functional. Hand wand to rinse off beach sand and it was supplied with high end shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. Outside is a sitting area with dual chairs, a round wooden table with an oil lamp. There is a dining table with chairs which we used one evening for some private dining. There is a hammock you can use to relax and take in all of the wonderful surrounding foliage and plants that adorn every inch of the property. Additionally, during the rainy season, an umbrella is placed just outside your doorway to enable you to get back and forth from the rooms to the concierge, lobby, or restaurant without getting drenched. Walking throughout the property, you will find a variety of plant and animal life. The layout, built within the confines of the natural habitat, is gorgeous! Additional smaller hotel rooms are on site, however, we did not see them personally. Wildlife on site include a local cat population (all very friendly), dogs, racoons, iguanas, monkeys, and a variety of birds and butterflies. The dining options at the hotel restaurant, El Barco, are premier. A daily breakfast is included in your stay and there is a wide range of options from fresh fruit, yogurts, fantastic bread, an omelet station, scrambled eggs, black beans and rice, fresh corn tortillas, potatoes, plantains, and sausage. Ask for Max! He is an incredible waiter and genuinely cares about his customers, as do each an every one of the Capitan Suizo staff. This hotel is just outside of all the craziness of Tamarindo but close enough to access it by beach, walking on the road, or a short Uber. My kids and I liked that it was a little quieter with a less crowded beach. The rooms are lovely and their commitment to the environment is admirable. Yes, you may encounter bugs at times but we had no issues and I am sure the staff would have helped us if needed. We love the cats and the wildlife. The pool is beautiful, the beach access is perfect and the lounge chairs are so comfortable. The concierge is extremely helpful and my teens’ surf lessons with Abraham were awesome. We loved the included breakfast and the restaurant has a good variety of food and very generous portions which my growing 15-year old appreciated. The staff was wonderful from the front desk, cleaning service, to the bartenders and servers. I liked that it was a small hotel because, as a solo parent traveling with teens, I was able to keep track of everyone and felt so comfortable and able to relax.

We stayed at Capitán Suizo for my daughter’s graduation present which I had been saving up for all year long. As soon as we walked in to the reception area, we were immersed in the feeling of being in a magical place, filled with cats, good smells and friendly staff, willing to help with your every need. We stayed in room 54 which was incredibly spacious and air conditioned. It also had a balcony which made it extra special. The bathroom was large and had complimentary shampoo, conditioner and body lotion which were actually better than the stuff o brought! My only complaint was the road noise is very loud as well as the construction by the room so I would recommend bringing a pair of good ear plugs to wear at night! The bar and restaurant were phenomenal. Angel, Pablo & Manuel made every day special by their bright smiles and personable service. I felt the genuinely loved their job and the guests that stay there. The lady at the concierge desk was incredibly helpful from booking our transportation and excursions, to helping me schedule an appointment with a medical doctor. A couple of things to point out, there are monkeys that howl and getting to see them is a real treat. They have several dogs and cats on the property that are friendly and might follow you around if you are lucky! Iguanas and read squirrels can be found roaming the property and even jumping in the pool! ( from what the staff told me). Also, the town of Tamarindo is walking distance and is full of things to do! I will definitely be back here next year for a more romantic trip with my partner. I will start saving up now!

The 9 nights we spent there were all part of a wonderful experience. Loved our garden level room; very private with all the beautiful vegetation surrounding us. Enjoyable to sit outside on our lounge chairs listening to the rain. Room was very comfortable and very clean. Coffee and water were replaced daily. Toiletries were very nice. A drying rack was provided and made it easy to get our swimsuits dried, combined with AC, a dehumidifier and ceiling fans. We enjoyed the restaurant for the breakfast buffet (homemade breads!), fun happy hours and very delicious dinners. We walked to nearby restaurants for a couple great evening meals. The grounds and pool were constantly and impeccably maintained; they even worked while it was raining. The grounds are beautiful. Kudos to them. City center Tamarindo is walkable. Cab rides are $6 (American) to and from. Location is perfect. Far enough away from the activities of town. Great walkable beach. Lounge chairs available on the grounds overlooking the beach where you can catch a good breeze, even with the high humidity. Lots of animals and birds to enjoy and of course, the howler monkeys. The crown jewel of Capitan Suizo has to be the staff. From Day 1, everyone knew our names and emanated joy, caring and hospitality . It started at the front desk with Christian and his associates . Rosa, wishing you the best to you with your new direction in life. Housekeeping staff was lovely. There were a lot of hugs upon departure. This resort definitely exceeded my expectations. The staff was so friendly and helpful, and the rooms had everything we needed. I especially enjoyed the lush and vibrant gardens along with the large variety of wildlife that roamed through the grounds. Another great feature is the private shaded lounging area just off the beach!

Absolutely perfect. The hotel was great. The wait staff was fantastic. I stayed in a bungalow. The outdoor shower was nice. I'm going to tell all my friends. Christian at the front was very helpful. The waitstaff accommodated us when our tours left before breakfast was served. Love those guys.

Our stay at Capitán Suizo was the perfect getaway. The peaceful, tropical setting made it easy to relax from the moment we arrived. The room was cozy and beautifully designed, allowing us to enjoy the sounds of the howler monkeys and other nature around us. The staff were incredibly attentive and made our stay feel special. We loved lounging by the quiet pool and taking short walks into Tamarindo for some local flavor. The combination of tranquility and convenient location made it an ideal escape. We highly recommend Capitán Suizo for anyone seeking peace and relaxation—we can't wait to return!

After spending three wonderful nights at the world-class Nayara Resort in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, we drove to the Pacific coast for a five-night stay at the W Hotel in Reserva Conchal. Unfortunately, the experience was so disappointing that we decided to check out four days early and look for alternative accommodations online. That’s when we came across Capitan Suizo Hotel in Tamarindo, and what a pleasant surprise it was! This charming, Swiss-owned beachfront resort turned out to be nothing short of perfection. The atmosphere at Capitan Suizo is both understated and elegant, offering excellent value for the level of amenities provided. The hotel is impeccably maintained, with lush, beautiful grounds and outstanding service that makes you feel special from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave. We stayed in a beachfront bungalow just steps from the ocean. The bungalow was beautifully furnished, featuring a private Jacuzzi, an outdoor shower, and a raised canopy bed. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, making mornings truly unforgettable. We enjoyed our complimentary breakfast just steps from our bungalow, which was a delightful way to begin each day. The staff at Capitan Suizo were exceptional, providing warm and attentive service throughout our stay, from check-in to check-out. If you’re planning a visit to Tamarindo, Capitan Suizo Beachfront Hotel is the only place to stay. We highly recommend it!

We absolutely loved this hotel. Tamarindo has a bit of a touristy vibe to it, but the hotel completely protects you from that -- you just don't experience that at all unless you go out and want to experience it. It is a good base for a number of activities (snorkeling and the boat tour of the estuary topped the list for us), and the concierge folks are very helpful indeed. If you are interested in local ceramics, don't arrange a tour -- just rent a car go to the Ecomuseo de la Cerámica Chorotega in San Vicente-- and get the director of the museum to show you her studio up the road. Amazing. Keep the tradition alive! Finally -- DO NOT MISS the restaurant across the street: Sofia Meditarraneo. Simply wonderful. If we had found it earlier, we might have eaten half our meals there. The restaurant at Capitan Suizo is, as of our visit, meh. The breakfast was good, and convenient. But everything else was mediocre. But the hotel is fabulous! Edit: weeks after we had left, we received a package in the mail. Inside: a T-shirt that I had inadvertently left behind. Wow!
