I've stayed at many hotels, but the experience at Wakax Hacienda was unique. The location is convenient. The hotel is just off the highway south of Tulum city. It is not on the beach, but the beach is less than ten minutes away. You are close to the Tulum ruins and the highway is convenient to go to any other sites. It is an easy approximately 60 minute drive from the airport. You enter the unassuming gate where they check your reservation and wave you through to the parking lot. You will be offered water and a cool towel prior to an easy check in process. We stayed in a comfy three room suite next to the office, but more private cottages are available too. Why is this hotel special? While Tulum has earned a reputation as a party town, the Wakax is a true oasis of serenity. I have rarely been anywhere so quiet, usually just the sounds of the occasional bird. While there are fifty rooms, the grounds are so expansive you will often feel that you are the only ones on the property. There are so many things to see and explore. Three pools, jungle paths, multiple cenotes. The pictures do not do justice to the place. For example, the pictures make the lagoons seem like algae-filled green. In reality, they are green but the water is clear and a pleasure to go paddle-boarding in. The attention to detail throughout the property is amazing, the designers had exquisite taste. We had previously been to a cenote on a tour and had the attitude "seen one cenote seen them all". That was before we met Gonzalo. He took the time to share the history of the property and he offered an extensive tour inside one of the property's cenotes. Long story short, it was one of the highlights of our vacation. Clearly, it's not a party hotel. You won't see many other guests except at the restaurant (which is excellent btw). The hotel is in a jungle and the management hasn't taken the fun out of exploring, so families with small children will want to be careful. The bottom line, if you stay here you will feel like you are on the inside of an episode of "Lifestyles of the rich and famous". We felt so special to have been a part of it for two days.
