I’ve been curious about Cava & Hotel Mastinell for years after seeing it on my Instagram feed, so I was excited to finally have an opportunity to make a two-night reservation at the start of our post-Christmas Spain/France vacation. I chose a package rate on the hotel’s website for their Deluxe Suite that included breakfast both mornings, a three course dinner one night, and a cava tour/tasting on-site. I had some questions prior to our arrival, and they were always answered promptly and courteously. I also arranged for the hotel to send a driver to the Barcelona airport to pick us up and bring us to the hotel upon our arrival. (It was about a 45 minute, 100 euro trip.) The hotel is just outside the city of Vilafranca del Penedés at the centre of a vast vineyard. The striking architecture is modern and edgy, but with nods to the past (Gaudi) that still make it welcoming. We arrived late afternoon, so our suite was ready. We filled out some paperwork and enjoyed a complimentary glass of cava, then we were escorted to our suite for a quick tour. The suite was even larger than anticipated, spanning the full width of the building, with vast windows on three sides overlooking the vineyards and the city in the distance. The views were mesmerizing. The living room had a dining table, small sofa, television, and minibar. The large bathroom had an industrial vibe with lots of concrete, two sinks, a walk-in shower, and a large tub set in front of one of the two enormous circular windows in the suite (the other was in the bedroom, opposite the bed). The bedroom was a couple of steps down from the living room and had ample storage for all of our clothes. There were also a couple of chairs and a small table in front of the window, but since it faced the driveway into the hotel, it would be a very exposed place to sit. After we unpacked and settled in, we opened a bottle of cava and placed a room service order, as we were exhausted from the 16 hours of travel. The food was delivered promptly and was delicious. I especially recommend their version of coca bread; it was the best we had anywhere in Spain. The next day we enjoyed a delicious and generous continental breakfast served right to our table (no buffet), then walked into the city to explore the area for a few hours. Our dinner reservation was for 8:30 PM, and we were surprised to be the first guests to arrive (it didn’t get very busy until about 9:30 PM). The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the cava and wine we enjoyed with the meal was also included. The next morning, after breakfast, we joined another couple for an English tour of the cava making facility followed by a tasting. It was an interesting and informative tour, and the guide was impressively knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his subject. We enjoyed all three wines we tasted.
