The White Horse

Great food and lovely staff. We visited for dinner on a Saturday evening with friends. The food was very good, plenty of choice and a specials option. The food was tasty and the staff were very helpful. Service is added to the bill. The atmosphere in the restaurant was just right. They have a private dining area for groups.

I came here with a friend of mine for a couple of nights whilst we did 'The Octagon', a series of walks nearby. The room in which we stayed was in a row of cabins or converted outbuildings behind the main pub. All of the rooms are named after birds and the decoration shares the same theme. Our room was en-suite end very spacious, with a firm bed which I prefer. The actual pub/restaurant itself was very pleasant, the staff were good and as well as having brighter lighting in the restaurant there were darker tables which felt more like a normal country pub. There is a stove to the rear of the pub which wasn't lit when we were there but would be very agreeable in the winter. The food was very good but we found the evening menu a bit too expensive so drove into Emsworth instead. The breakfast menu was really, really good and almost worth the trip alone. A cooked breakfast is £15 which seems a lot but they were happy to add extras e.g. black pudding free-of-charge. There is plenty of parking outside and if you like that sort of thing Goodwood isn't too far away either. Apparently it's popular with the country-sports types but I wouldn't let that put you off too much. Either way we had a great couple of days, thanks.

Only popped in here as we got lost looking for another pub but glad we did.Staff were very good and a shout out to George who loaned us his lighter.We didn’t eat this time around unless you count the pot of chips we had to go with our beers which were gorgeous skin on fat chips but we will be returning to sample the menu and update.

We checked into this oven of a room no fan only skylight windows and roasted for one night. No shower - tiny bathroom. Left the next day £250 per night didn’t stay the 2nd night - breakfast was very average. Not for us. Got some aircon or provide fans and have showers and we might come back.

We stayed for one night in the Barn Owl room, which whilst compact, has a fabulous private covered terrace which would be lovely in warm weather. (Could be even better if the hotel provided a heater for the terrace to enable enjoyment on slightly chillier evenings - not a criticism, a constructive suggestion :-). This is a lovely pub, busy, lots of dogs, super outdoor spaces, great beers on tap and good wines. Dinner was outstanding, as was breakfast; however, would suggest that the management look at staffing levels, as one of the evening staff was clearly under pressure and stressed (very busy in the bar and restaurant), and the other member was frenetically busy, though coping extremely well. Breakfast the next morning could also have benefitted from another pair of hands as the outstanding and redoubtable Megan (what an asset to the White Horse!) was run ragged taking orders, serving, checking guests out and trying to clear tables - all with a cheery smile, but resulting in not having enough time to respond to random requests. But overall, a great place which we will look forward to visiting again.

Lovely pub, really friendly staff, nice menu. Room was upstairs, which was fine, apart from the bar where stairs meet wood floor which was a trip hazard. Lovely room, nice touches, clean bed with white linen. Bed was really comfy. Two velux windows have a nice breeze. Lovely copper bath with bamford toiletries which were gorgeous. Bathroom floor grout was quite grubby and detritus from tiling in the corner. Other than that couldn’t fault the stay at all. Lovely gardens too.

A wonderfully comfortable pub with delicious food. There was an electricity cut-out while I was there so they moved me to another pub/hotel they own The Royal Oak in East Lavant with even more spacious accommodation. So great service and delightful room (in both places). I would recommend them without hesitation.

When you advertise and price the rooms as a 5* hotel, then you must expect to be assessed to a high standard. I did, and bottom line I was very disappointed with this hotel. Firstly, hygiene. I noticed flies in the restaurant when having dinner and counted four flies buzzing about just the till area when I went down for breakfast. It's not good when you leave a restaurant feeling itchy. The hotel advertises as 'dog friendly' which is fair enough, but I didn't expect to see a plastic bag of dog poo left just inside the front hedge for the duration of my stay. Continuing on, the wait of at last 30 minutes for starters at dinner and the lengthy wait for cooked breakfast wasn't acceptable. There was an apology for dinner delay, but no explanation. Rather than wait to confirm my breakfast order, I was calling out my preference as the sole waitress headed back to the kitchen. Oddly, for breakfast there was no help-yourself option for fruit juice, cereal, croissants etc. If there was, I missed it and wasn't pointed to where I could get juice and refills. Obviously it's personal decision on whether to smoke, but I wasn't so keen that one of the servers smelled, I believe, of cigarette smoke. I didn't care for lack of shower in the room. The heavily slanted ceiling meant there was no shower-over-bath option, although there was a shower attachment to wash your hair while sitting in the small bath. Oddly, the gel and shampoo dispensers were mounted half-way up the wall; perhaps whoever fitted these hadn't got the message about no shower? Moving to the room itself, it lacked a straight-back chair to use at the desk. A large trunk served no useful purpose in the room, removing this would give space for the comfortable chair plus a chair to use at the desk. While bottled water was provided, this was at room temperature. A mini-fridge is an expected feature for a 5* hotel, at least in my opinion. Also the hotel makes a point of not providing UHT creamers in the room, you need to go and ask for a thermos of milk. For a 5* hotel, I've have expected this to be provided without asking, even better if it was already in a mini-fridge. I noted that only white sugar lumps were provided with tea/coffee, kind of expected sweeteners would be offered too! Going back to organising the room better, there was minimal space between the squared-off bed-leg and the door of the en-suite. I must have hit my shin on the edge at least 3 times while walking about. There's no air-con in the room I was in, although the windows do open. Unfortunately the two Velux window give a perfect view of the kitchen extractor fan, so I kept them closed to reduce the fan noise. One thing that did raise a wan smile was the 'Please don't take me' stickers on all the bathroom toiletries. I guess even 5* hotels get the wrong sort these days... If you can't tell, this is not a hotel I shall be returning to.

We were 3 couples and 2 dogs looking for the perfect venue for New Years Eve & we certainly found it. A 5mile circular walk from the pub meant we had earned the delicious evening meal in very festive surroundings. The rooms were small but very well kitted out with comfortable beds & decent showers. The staff were brilliant & the large number of guests there with their dogs gave us the excuse to meet people & see in the New Year in a very convivial atmosphere!
